Lessons From Leo

Momma Lion,
Do learn us your ways.

You need not pounce, hiss, lash.
(Is our knowing that you might,
you have done...
Is this a territorial memory?)
Ambling slowly, pausing, still, even.
Inconceivable to cross you.

Pride is no sin,
your pride your rightful fiefdom.
Little ones gang and mewl and tumble, mistaken,
unawake yet to certain inheritance
guileless defenses
might-be opponents
unrend(er)ed.

Fierce Momma Lion
shining your radiant, opulent,
lustrous, impassioned
without question you give all.
Scaring off night sky's dangers,
stay with us as we blink and traverse this darkness.

Ok — so I have a personal deadline for this newsletter that expired 8 days ago...but the more I think about it the less that comes into my head...so I'm doing what I have to do with a lot of stuff — I just have to start and see what follows — that is my "work practice" in a nutshell...

"Work in Progress"                       from Working Space by Martyn Thompson

"Work in Progress"                       from Working Space by Martyn Thompson

When I start a new project, it's rarely based on research or even extensive thought! Generally an idea slowly pervades my conscious, gets it grip and then I feel forced to make something. Often the initial result is disappointing — to say the least. It's incredible what a lot of energy it takes to realize that idea and sometimes I don't know where the determination comes from.

"Country Life"                                      from Interiors by Martyn Thompson

"Country Life"                                      from Interiors by Martyn Thompson

Anyway — I am determined to finish this newsletter. There are 2 main obstacles. A - My head, which is currently a chaotic jumble of thoughts, compounded by B - the renovation that's occurring upstairs where the entire floor is being completely gutted and rebuilt. I'm trying not to think how long this might take. Already the elevator is constantly unavailable and the noise, in what was a very serene studio, is an intermittent yet persistent banging and scraping — most distracting. Leaving New York and settling on a farm has been a recurring notion the past few days...

Fabrics from Cezanne's Shadow                                                  Martyn Thompson

Most of my thoughts are about Cezanne's Shadow. Not quite a year ago I started toying with reproducing my photos on fabric — I'm always looking for new things to experiment with, I think that's part of my Aquarian nature. As is often the case, I got over excited and before you know it I'm setting up a fabric and wallpaper business. Digital technology, bless, has made this type of diversification a viable option — there are now so many ways of using your photographs. So...finally we've reached the stage of showing people — opinions are very welcome — all the more as I'm very new at this — but they are all very different which is leaving me pretty confused!

                                                                                                         Madonna                                                                           Steven Meisel

                                                                                                         Madonna                                                                           Steven Meisel

Everything I read about a Leo makes me think they never get confused — this forceful being appears to know it's mind so well! My Leo friends often confirm this — they don't seem to be bothered by thoughts outside of their own. Although there must be a lot of Leo men, I always associate the sign with women — principally Madonna — the world's most famous lion.

Lots of regular stuff isn't happening this holiday month of August. Maggie is on vacation so we didn't get to play in the kitchen and Dove has started a full time job...consequently there's none of his usual illustrations nor a special Maggie recipe but I'm recommending everyone eat ice cream — like this yummy one from the lovely Gather Journal.

                                                                                                        "Nasturtiums"                                                                     Oscar Droege

Last weekend, I worked with Dove on a performance piece he created for a show in Bushwick, that involved lighting 500 candles and eating a lot of nasturtiums. Beginning to end the piece lasted 50 minutes. It became a meditation on our relationship — our interpersonal strengths and weaknesses. Most of all I loved being under his guidance. As I've been freelance all my life, I am generally the initiator...I rarely get to just be a participant — a good reminder to me to get out of the driving seat more often.

Happy August
